VOLUNTEER WITH US

Our museum is run with the help of volunteers from the local community.  Many of them having been miners, they bring a wealth of first-hand knowledge and many a personal anecdote of their time in the mining industry.  However, you do not have to have been a miner to volunteer with us, we welcome anybody who has a genuine interest in supporting the work of the museum and there are many opportunities to get involved.

Tour Guide

Tour guides are often the first point of call in welcoming visitors to the museum.  A public facing position, it requires you to engage in conversation about the stories, objects and experiences in the museum.  You do not need to know about coal mining, we are looking for a warm, friendly persona and a willingness to learn!

Education Support

Our education volunteers help us to deliver tours, workshops and experiences to visiting schools and colleges.  From drama to science, art and even politics, there is always something exciting happening when we have children and young people at the museum!  Education volunteers work alongside the museum staff and are a vital part of our education offer.

Events & Projects

The museum runs a year-round programme of events and projects.  Many of the events are out and about in the community, meeting new people and helping them to engage with the museum.  We also host concerts, festivals and special events on-site all of which could not happen without our wonderful volunteers.

Archives

The museum is also home to The Kent Coalfield Archives.  As an archive volunteer you can expect to work behind the scenes to prepare objects for cataloguing, storage and restoration.
