THE CHARITY

The Kent Mining Museum (KMM) is run and supported by The Kent Mining Heritage Foundation (KMHF) charity whose Mission is to:

  • To record and preserve Kent’s mining heritage, maintain the Kent Mining Museum on the former site of Betteshanger Colliery, and to further public understanding of old and new forms of energy

  • To enhance the quality of life in the local community through the provision of education, skill-sharing, and activities.

  • To provide opportunities (ie. Volunteering, events) that foster social welfare.

The use of energy has a profound impact on human evolution and the health of the planet. Therefore, the KMHF and KMM have a vision to:

  • Increase awareness and understanding of the challenges and successes of the Kent Coalfield as an energy source within the wider context of British social and economic development, through collections care and oral histories.

  • Teach the public about various energy productions (past, present, and future) and their use to be better able to make energy choices themselves through outreach, formal and informal learning programmes.

In alignment with the Mission of the KMHF, the aims of the KMM are to tell the story of the Kent Coalfield by:

  • Collecting and conserving the stories of the Kent mining communities in order to share them in an exciting, engaging and accessible way for benefit and enjoyment of future generations.

  • To enable a wide range of people to participate in, and learn about, Kent’s mining heritage through outreach and education propgrammes; to celebrate the coalmining industry in Kent, its wide economic and social impact (ie. Kent Miners Festival).

  • To bring together the Kent mining communities, their stories and collections – specifically the villages of: Aylesham (Snowdown), Elvington and Eythorne (Tilmanstone), Mill Hill/Deal (Betteshanger) and Hersden/Chislet (Chislet).
