KENT MINERS' FESTIVAL 2026

Kent Mining Museum is thrilled to once again bring this much-loved, traditional village green celebration back to the beautiful surroundings of Betteshanger Park.

Step into a lively day packed with heritage and community spirit—where music fills the air, delicious food tempts every taste, games spark laughter, and an array of vintage vehicles adds a nostalgic charm. Whether you’re coming with family, friends, or simply looking for a great day out, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The fun starts at 10.30am with a display of the Kent mining banners.  Wave the miners off as they walk up to the entrance of the park, or join in and walk alongside them!

Scroll down to explore the story behind this cherished event and discover what exciting experiences await you in 2026.

FESTIVAL TRADITION

Gala 1955 programme.jpg

The modern-day festival draws inspiration from the traditional miners’ galas, once held annually and hosted by a different pit village each year.

Historically, these galas began in the north of England during the Victorian era, serving as powerful celebrations of community. They brought mining families together to show solidarity, pride, and strength.

By the 1950s, the tradition had reached the Kent coalfields, where it became a highlight of the local calendar. Each year, a different pit village would host the event, welcoming visitors with a lively programme of activities for the whole family.

Sadly, following the closure of the pits, the tradition came to an end. However, in 2002, it was proudly revived, once again bringing the community together to celebrate its shared heritage.

At Kent Mining Museum, we are proud to have been custodians for the festival in its current form for the past four years. We look forward to welcoming you again this year—and are excited to announce that next year’s festival will be hosted by the historic mining village of Aylesham.

Vintage Bus Service

We’re once again delighted to be supported by the vintage bus owners of East Kent. Alongside their display, they’ll be running an extra-special shuttle service between Betteshanger Park and the surrounding villages. Best of all, travel on these beautiful classic vehicles is completely FREE.
